Gaza: Home to the Highest Number of Child Amputees in Modern History

According to the United Nations and the World Health Organization, Gaza has become the place with the highest number of child amputees in modern history.

Amid this humanitarian catastrophe, Jusoor Al-Amal (Bridges of Hope) Association continues to provide life-changing support for children who have lost their limbs.

Gaza in Numbers

UNICEF reports reveal an alarming reality:

  1. More than 10 children lose one or more limbs every day.
  2. Over 4,000 children have become amputees since October 2023.
  3. Hundreds of children underwent life-saving surgery under extremely limited medical conditions, with many lacking adequate anesthesia.

What Does Jusoor Al-Amal Do?

Despite the blockade and severe shortages, our teams continue serving children across Gaza.

Prosthetic Services

Providing, maintaining, and repairing prosthetic limbs to help children regain mobility.

Psychological Support

Delivering trauma-informed counseling for children coping with both limb loss and the psychological impact of war.

Physical Rehabilitation

Specialized rehabilitation programs that help children adapt to their new reality and reintegrate into daily life.

The Challenges We Face

Our work is constrained by several critical obstacles:

  1. Restrictions on importing essential prosthetic materials, including carbon fiber.
  2. Fuel shortages that severely limit access to displaced families.
  3. Children's rapid growth requires prosthetic replacement approximately every six months, creating continuous funding needs.

How You Can Help

Your support can make a lasting difference.

  1. Donate to provide prosthetic limbs and essential medical supplies.
  2. Share these children's stories to raise global awareness.
  3. Advocate for humanitarian corridors that allow critical medical equipment into Gaza.

Conclusion

The situation in Gaza is far more than a medical crisis.

It is a humanitarian tragedy affecting the future of an entire generation.

Jusoor Al-Amal (Bridges of Hope) remains committed to restoring hope, dignity, and mobility to children who need it most.
